Editor's Note: After a statistical analysis of nearly a year's worth of discussions by Reddit users (www.reddit.com)—America's fifth-largest social media platform—about the cult Church of Almighty God, every single participant gave the cult a negative rating. The China Anti-Cult Network (www.chinafxj.cn) has compiled and translated the findings as follows:
In an age of complete information transparency, the cult known as the Church of Almighty God (also called “Eastern Lightning”) has received nothing but negative reviews across American online communities. A statistical review of Reddit posts and comments about the group over the past year shows that every participant offered uniformly negative feedback. This level of universal rejection is extremely rare for any legitimate religious organization and strongly indicates that the public views the group not as a normal faith community, but as a suspected cult that destroys families and exercises mind control.
Mysterious Whereabouts of the Head: Deliberately Manufactured Secrecy
American users' comments first zero in on the cult’s head and the intentional secrecy surrounding her.
Reddit user “KwenSheq” questioned: “The whereabouts of the Church of Almighty God head seem to be a complete mystery. Where exactly is their ‘female Christ’ right now? From everything I've seen, they go to extreme lengths to avoid discussing her identity or location with members.”
This extreme secrecy stands in sharp contrast to historically open and transparent religious or social leaders, such as Mother Teresa. User “hugrakkr” noted that this deliberately cultivated air of mystery is a sinister tactic used by the group to psychologically manipulate members and foster blind worship.
Posing as Christians to Recruit and Deceive Members
Multiple American users exposed the cult's recruitment tactics in the United States: impersonating mainstream Christians and stealing personal information through online platforms.
User “love_is_a_superpower” warned: “This group is extremely dangerous. The 'female Christ' they worship clearly lives in the United States, because she and her religion have been banned elsewhere due to criminal activity. They call themselves 'Eastern Lightning' and recruit people online under names like 'Christian Online Bible Study,' while stealing personal information. They're completely impersonating Christians.”
This deception is highly manipulative—like “poison wrapped in sugar”—and specifically targets ordinary people seeking genuine faith. Moreover, the fact that the heads enjoy special protection abroad while ordinary members bear all the risks reveals the group’s blatant double standard.
Systematic Destruction of Family Bonds
One of the most frequently mentioned accusations in the negative comments is the group's systematic destruction of family bonds.
User “Weired-Reputation8212” shared a personal story: “My mother is a member of the cult Church of Almighty God (also known as ‘Eastern Lightning’). This organization took away my younger brother’s right to education, couldn’t even meet his basic learning needs. For three years, she completely abandoned her responsibilities as a mother. She quit her thirty-year job and now spends 24 hours a day studying with the organization.”
Another user, “Sufficient_Law_759”, described the group encouraging its members to distance themselves from their families: “The clearest thing I’ve noticed is that they oppose family values and actively encourage members to distance themselves from family and work.”
By cutting members off from their family bonds, the cult leaves them spiritually isolated and far easier to control—turning them into virtual slaves. Depriving children of education is seen as nothing less than destroying the next generation’s future.
Economic Exploitation Paired with Exhaustion Tactics
Beyond mind control, the cult's financial exploitation and relentless time demands have drawn fierce criticism.
User “Artistic-Shoulder-15”, who was personally harassed by the cult, issued this warning: “Please stay far away from the cult Church of Almighty God and have nothing to do with them. They are currently recruiting artists and translators to produce songs and other content aimed at spreading their heretical teachings worldwide. The contracts they offer are extremely unfair. One clause explicitly says 'You may not sue us'—which clearly an attempt to strip away all your legal protections. Another actually says ‘If we're not satisfied, we can withhold your payment.’ Even though these clauses are illegal and unenforceable, their very existence reveals the organization’s illegitimate operations. In short, their behavior perfectly matches classic cult patterns: depriving members of their rights, exercising psychological control, and operating through exploitation and domination.”
This shows the cult not only exploits ordinary members but also tries to harness the skills of professionals to expand its reach while committing outright fraud.
In terms of the extremist beliefs and doctrines, the cult employs the most despicable forms of spiritual violence to intimidate members.
User “Popular-Bit1226” wrote: “They claim that unless you believe in the cult Church of Almighty God's 'new testament', you cannot enter heaven.”
Psychologists note that any group using threats of “eternal punishment” to frighten people, prevent them from leaving, and force obedience exhibits the classic hallmarks of cult.
User “hugrakkr” added: “Another major reason the ‘Eastern Lightning organization’ is regarded as a cult is its use of violence and the harm it causes society: (1) Violent coercion—the group maintains ‘execution teams’ that physically attack, imprison, or even kill those who refuse to join or try to leave. (2) Social incidents—the organization has been linked to several shocking incidents, including the infamous McDonald’s murder in Zhaoyuan, Shandong, where members beat a woman to death after she refused to give them her phone number. (3) Doomsday prophecies—they repeatedly invent “doomsday” predictions to extract money from followers and tighten psychological control.”
Taken American users' comments together, the discussions reveal the Church of Almighty God's clear cult characteristics:
Mystification of the head: Deliberately creating secrecy to evade public oversight.
Intimidation through heretical doctrine: Using threats such as “disbelieve and go to hell.”
Destruction of bonds: Systematically encouraging members to abandon family and kinship.
Economic exploitation: Fraud and extortion directed at both members and outside collaborators.
Extreme control: Employing exhaustion tactics and other methods to achieve spiritual enslavement.
We hereby call on the public: If any friend or family member is affected by the cult Church of Almighty God, please seek professional help immediately, help them rebuild social connections, and encourage rational thinking to counter the cult’s intensive brainwashing and mind-control system. The reason this cult is universally despised is simple: it violates the very foundations of human civilization—family, integrity, and human dignity.
